Why this conference?

Neurological and psychiatric diseases have long been attributed primarily to alterations affecting neurons. Growing evidence on the pathogenetic role of non-neuronal cells is profoundly reshaping our understanding of disease mechanisms and, with it, the landscape of therapeutic targets. These cell types are not merely passive bystanders, but key players in the onset, progression, and potential protection against numerous neuropathologies of high clinical impact and pharmaceutical interest. Moreover, as already explored in the last edition, also the relationship between oncology and the nervous system continues to be of growing relevance.

Following the success of the first four editions, MTN5 aims to consolidate this vision by presenting the most recent preclinical and clinical data identifying non-neuronal targets as new therapeutic opportunities in currently undertreated areas. Our perspective is that therapeutic strategies capable of modulating not only neurons, but the entire cellular microenvironment of the central and peripheral nervous system — including glial, immune, and vascular cells — may open new avenues for pharmacological intervention in conditions where unmet clinical need remains high.

The congress covers the full spectrum of non-neuronal cell populations and their interactions with neurons, in both physiological and pathological conditions, including: neural stem cells, astrocytes and microglia, OPCs and oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells, immune cells, enteric glia, neuro-glial-vascular interactions, the blood-brain barrier, the choroid plexus, meninges.

As in previous editions, MTN5 has the specific objective of promoting talented young researchers, providing them with international visibility. The scientific program includes keynote lectures by internationally renowned experts, thematic sessions with selected oral presentations, and poster sessions.

Looking forward to meeting you in Padova!
